Escambron Marine Park

What it is

Escambron Marine Park is a small protected reserve on a rocky point between Old San Juan and Condado, and the best urban snorkeling spot in Puerto Rico. A shallow fringing reef sits a short swim from the sheltered beach, holding parrotfish, sergeant majors, blue tang, the occasional green sea turtle and a scatter of historic cannons and anchor remains on the sea floor. Because it is protected and easy to reach by car, taxi or a short walk from Condado hotels, it draws families, beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.

How to snorkel it

Most snorkelers spend one to two hours in the water at Escambron, entering on the calmer western side of the cove and following the reef line. Go on a calm morning before the trade winds pick up, as afternoon chop stirs the sand and drops visibility. There is parking, restrooms and lifeguards on busy days, and a guided shore snorkel is worth it on a first visit to find the turtles and read the conditions.

Hours & practical info

Beach and reef open daily during daylight hours, free public access. Lifeguards present on busy days.
