Sea Turtle Snorkeling in PR

Sea Turtle Snorkeling in PR

Green sea turtles live year round on the Puerto Rico coast. The Escambron beach in San Juan has a resident population that grazes seagrass between coral heads. Hawksbill turtles, rarer, prefer the deeper reef. Loggerhead and leatherback nest on Vieques and Culebra beaches but are not commonly seen by snorkelers.

This guide tells you exactly where to find each species, the federal rules on distance and how to photograph a turtle ethically without disturbing it.

Where to see green turtles

Escambron beach has resident green turtles year round. You will usually see one or two per snorkel session in the shallow seagrass area, between 5 and 15 feet deep. They surface every 5 to 10 minutes to breathe.

Condado Lagoon also has occasional green turtles but the visibility is lower. The Icacos cays catamaran tours frequently encounter green turtles at the second snorkel stop.

Where to see hawksbill turtles

Hawksbill turtles prefer the reef edge in deeper water (15 to 50 feet). They are common around Culebra and Vieques. From San Juan you would need a boat snorkel tour to the outer reef to have a real chance. They are smaller than green turtles, with a beaked head and a more colorful shell.

Hawksbills are critically endangered. Photograph but never touch and never chase. They scare easily and will flee deep if disturbed.

Federal rules

All sea turtles in US waters are protected under the Endangered Species Act. You must stay at least 10 feet away. You cannot touch, feed, chase or block the path of a turtle. Touching a turtle can transfer skin bacteria that cause serious infections.

Tour guides are required to brief you on these rules. Violations carry fines up to 50,000 USD per incident.

How to ethically photograph a turtle

Float still. Do not kick. Hold your breath if needed to stop bubbles. The turtle will surface every few minutes and you can predict the path. Stay above and to the side, never directly in front.

Use natural light. Flash photography spooks turtles and can damage their eyes. A wide angle GoPro or smartphone in a waterproof case is enough.

Best time of year

Turtles are present in Escambron year round. Sightings are slightly more reliable in summer (May to September) when seagrass is most active. Sunrise and late afternoon are best for behavior. Midday they are often resting.

Nesting season for green turtles in Puerto Rico runs July to October. On Culebra beaches you may see a tagged research turtle. Do not interfere.

Sea turtles in San Juan are reliable, beautiful and legally protected. Visit Escambron in the morning, stay 10 feet away, photograph from the side, and the turtles will continue grazing as if you were not there. That is the goal.
