Best Season to Snorkel San Juan

San Juan has snorkelable water 365 days a year. Surface temperature stays between 78 and 82 Fahrenheit. But conditions, visibility and crowds vary a lot by month. Hurricane season, north swell, cruise day traffic and trade winds shape what you actually see and feel underwater.

This guide breaks down the year by month, says which weeks to avoid and tells you the best window for clear water, calm conditions and few people on the reef.

The 30 second answer

April through August is the best snorkel window in San Juan. Calmest water, best visibility (30 to 60 feet), warmest air. December through March can have north swell that stirs the reef. September and October are hurricane peak and unpredictable.

Best months in order: May, June, April, July, August. Avoid weeks with active tropical storms (forecast on the National Hurricane Center website).

Month by month

January and February: dry season, often clear, but cold fronts bring north swell that closes the reef for one to three days at a time. Visibility 20 to 40 feet on good days.

March: transition month. Trade winds steady. Visibility recovering. Good for catamaran tours, less ideal for shore snorkel.

April through June: peak season. Calmest water, longest sunshine, visibility 30 to 60 feet, warmest air. Book early because cruise ships are full.

July and August: still excellent. Warmer water (82 F). Occasional thunderstorms in the afternoon, plan morning sessions.

September and October: hurricane peak. Cheaper rates but high risk of cancellation. Visibility variable. Only book with flexible cancellation policy.

November and December: improving. December has cold fronts that pause the season briefly but otherwise very good.

Avoid these conditions

North swell after a winter cold front. Wave heights over 6 feet make Escambron unsnorkelable. Check buoy data at NDBC station 41053.

Heavy rain. Rain runs off the city into the lagoons and reef areas and drops visibility for 24 hours. After heavy rain, wait a day.

Active tropical storm or hurricane within 500 miles. Even far storms send swell.

Daily timing

Sunrise through 10 AM is the calmest and clearest. Trade winds pick up at midday. After 3 PM the wind drops again and the water can be glassy at sunset, but visibility is reduced due to lower light.

Tuesday through Thursday have fewer cruise day crowds. Friday afternoons and weekends are crowded everywhere.

What about water temperature

Water is 78 F in February and 82 F in August. A swimsuit is enough year round for most people. If you get cold easily, a thin 2 mm shorty wetsuit makes the day more comfortable from December through March.

Air temperature drops at night in winter to 65 F. The water always feels warm if the air is cold.

Plan your San Juan snorkel for May or June if you can. Avoid the hurricane peak unless your booking is flexible. Go early in the morning, Tuesday to Thursday, and you will get the calmest water and the fewest people on any reef in the city.
