Family Snorkel Spots in San Juan

Family Snorkel Spots in San Juan

Snorkeling with kids in San Juan is doable for every age from 4 up if you pick the right spot. The combination of calm protected water, shallow depth and quick exit access is what matters. Three locations in San Juan tick all the boxes. Two more are decent but with caveats.

This guide covers the kid friendly spots, what age each works for, gear sizing and how to keep small swimmers safe in the water.

Escambron beach with kids

Escambron is the top kid snorkel spot in San Juan. The bay is enclosed by a breakwater, the water is 4 to 8 feet deep, lifeguards are on duty, the sand entry is gradual and the reef life is dense.

Ages 4 and up can join with a kid mask and life vest. The marine reserve rangers walk the beach and will help if your child gets nervous. Best mornings are Tuesday to Thursday before 10 AM, less crowded.

Boqueron Beach and Crash Boat

Both are on the west and north coasts and require a 2 hour drive. Not practical for a single day from San Juan unless you stay overnight. Skip these and stick to Escambron with kids if you are based in San Juan.

Condado Lagoon kayak for older kids

The Condado Lagoon is safe but the snorkel visibility is low. For kids 8 and up who want a kayak plus brief snorkel combo, this works. The chance of seeing a manatee or tarpon is a good motivator. Skip for children under 8 because the kayak distance can tire them.

Use a tandem sit on top kayak so a parent and child share. Wear life vests at all times.

Gear sizing for kids

Kid masks come in two sizes, junior (ages 4 to 9) and youth (ages 9 to 14). Adult masks do not fit kids and will leak. Buy or rent a proper kid mask, the rental shops at Escambron have them.

Kid fins should be short and adjustable. Snorkels should have a kid sized mouthpiece. A US Coast Guard certified life vest is mandatory for kids who are not strong swimmers, even in calm water.

Safety rules for kids

Adult to child ratio of one to one until age 10. Hold hands or use a tow leash on a vest. No alone time on the reef. Set a return signal (hand on head means come back). Teach kids never to touch the reef or wildlife before entering.

Sunscreen and rash guard. The Caribbean sun is brutal and reflects off the water. Reapply every 90 minutes and cover shoulders, neck and back.

For families in San Juan, Escambron beach is the answer. Calm water, shallow depth, kid gear available, lifeguards and dense marine life. Go early, bring a kid mask that fits, keep one adult per child within arm reach, and the kids will remember it longer than the cruise.
