Catamaran to Icacos Cays: Is It Worth It?
Catamaran tours from Fajardo to Cayo Icacos are the highest selling snorkel experience marketed to San Juan visitors. Operators promise turquoise water, two snorkel stops on a remote uninhabited cay, lunch and open bar. The reality is mixed. Some catamarans deliver perfect days. Others are floating booze cruises with 10 minutes of crowded snorkel.
This honest review tells you what to expect, which operators are worth booking and whether the catamaran beats sticking around in San Juan.
What Icacos cays actually are
Cayo Icacos is a small uninhabited cay about 2 nautical miles off Fajardo on the east coast of Puerto Rico. It is part of the La Cordillera marine reserve. The cay has a white sand beach, no facilities and excellent shallow reef on the east side.
Visibility is typically 50 to 80 feet, much better than Escambron, because Icacos is far from the city runoff. Reef fish density is also higher.

Pros of the catamaran day
The water at Icacos is clearer than anywhere in San Juan proper. The boat ride is calm, the food and open bar are usually included, and a good operator gives you 90 minutes total snorkeling across two stops. For travelers who want a full beach plus snorkel day, this is excellent.
Beach time on the cay is the real selling point. White sand, turquoise water, easy shallow swimming with the snorkel gear still on. Almost everyone loves the beach part more than the snorkel part.
Cons of the catamaran day
You spend 90 minutes driving each way from San Juan to Fajardo, then 45 minutes on the boat out and back. Total time in the water on snorkel: 60 to 90 minutes. Total day: 9 hours. Some operators pack 40 plus people onto the boat, which makes the snorkel time crowded and the music loud.
Sea conditions vary. Some days the boat ride to Icacos is rough and people get seasick. Take dramamine 30 minutes before boarding if you are prone.
How to pick a good operator
Read the last 20 reviews on Viator before booking. Look for capacity (under 35 people is better), snorkel time stated in minutes not just stops, and gear quality. Avoid operators with consistent complaints about the snorkel being only 15 minutes.
Best rated operators in 2026 are Salty Dog, East Island Excursions and Erin Go Bragh. Prices 95 to 130 USD with port and hotel pickup.
Should you book it
Book the catamaran if you have one full free day, want beach plus snorkel together, do not mind a 9 hour day, and would otherwise spend the day relaxing. Skip it if you want maximum snorkel time only, or you have less than 7 hours free.
For cruise passengers with a long port day (in by 8 AM, out after 8 PM), the catamaran works. For shorter days, do Escambron beach snorkel instead.
The catamaran to Icacos cays is worth it for the beach and the clearer water. It is not the densest snorkel day. Pick a small boat operator, take seasickness pills if you need them, and treat it as a beach day with snorkel rather than a snorkel day with a beach.
